Empowering Women and Children to be Safe from Domestic Violence

Caption: Sara Gershen, Violence Intervention Program Manager, and Dave Haynik, Vice President of Programs, recently presented a talk on the program to visitors representing judicial systems in more than 16 countries and the U.S. State Department. The foreign dignitaries participated in the project sponsored by the New Orleans Diplomacy Council.

Family Service of Greater New Orleans is recognized by the criminal court system as its top provider for assistance to women affected by domestic violence and its highly acclaimed Violence Intervention Program for abusers.

The Violence Intervention Program works with clients who have been mandated to complete group counseling for domestic violence or anger management. Family Service provides a number of groups, serving more than 100 clients per month referred by the court system.

Using nationally recognized and state supported curriculum materials, Program Manager Sara Gershen provides counseling in the areas of domestic violence intervention, anger management, and diversion.

“These groups provide clients with education and the skills to change the thoughts and behaviors that led to their arrests and to reduce violence in our communities,” Sara explained.

Hickory Dickory Rock 2014

A spring downpour didn’t stop hundreds of children and families turning out for the annual Hickory Dickory Rock in City Park’s Storyland and Carousel Gardens on Saturday, April 5.

“Despite the weather, the kids had a great time and that’s all that matters,” said Event Chair and FSGNO board member Michael Liebaert. “We especially appreciate the crew at City Park and the band Bag of Donuts who kept the fun going in the rain,” he added.

Mark your calendars for next year’s event on Saturday, April 18, 2015! Support from this provides greatly needed funding for programs to strengthen the health and well-being of thousands of our region’s most vulnerable children and their families.
